Advantages of belt drive
1. Maintenance-free: No regular lubrication (greasing) is required. It is resistant to dirt, so the vehicle body stays clean. It does not stretch easily, so once the tension is properly adjusted, no further adjustments are needed for a long time.
2. Outstanding quietness
Unlike chains, where metal parts come into contact with each other, belts made of rubber or resin produce very quiet operation.
3. Smooth power transmission: Because there is little metal play, the sudden jolt when you open the throttle is suppressed, resulting in a mild and direct acceleration feel.
4. Lightweight and Durable: Lighter than chainsets with comparable strength. Further weight reduction achieved by adopting an aluminum sprocket.
*Regarding adjusting the belt tension
Proper initial adjustment is crucial for belt drives. Slack in the belt can lead to breakage or a shortened belt lifespan.
Tension gauge
Measured by the amount of deflection when a load of approximately 4.5 kg (10 pounds)** is applied. Approximate deflection range: 8 mm to 14 mm
Simple finger measurement without using a tension gauge.
Applying an exact 4.5kg load is difficult, but you can judge it by the feeling when you press firmly with the pad of your finger.
Measurement guidelines:
Press down firmly with your thumb at the midpoint between the upper and lower spans of the belt. Typically, there should be a slight sag, such as **"about 10mm to 15mm" where the first joint of your thumb sinks slightly.**
Signs of "overexertion":
If the bearing barely moves when you press it with your finger, or if it's so stiff that it hurts your finger, it's too tight. This can damage the bearing and cause a "whining" noise while driving.
Signs that it's "too loose":
If the pulley teeth lift off the belt or the belt becomes wavy when lightly pressed with a finger, it will cause "tooth skipping" during acceleration and deceleration, damaging the belt.
The secret to making your belt last longer is to adjust it so that it's not too tight at the point where it should be tightest.
